I’ve been posting on Twitter for a while about fitness and the gym in general and to be honest, I struggle and have struggled for a long time staying motivated and with keeping my diet clean.

I was lazy for a few years with both exercise and my diet. I would eat endless crap and not move much at all. I did this for about 3 years. I always liked the thought of having a nice body and being able to show it off, but the truth is I gave in to my clothes sizes rising. By this I mean buying bigger sizes to stay comfortable instead of the other.

Fast forward to the present. I’ve lost nearly two stone, but still find it hard to keep motivated. I go to the gym, but not as often as I’d like. I find the hardest thing for me to do is to actually leave the house to go, but once I’m there I give it my all – 100% or nothing. I love the feeling of working out, knowing I’ve done it and can do it again.

So, to keep motivated I like to watch YouTube videos of some of my favourite fitness peeps, like ChelseaLifts, LexFitness and PumpChasers to name a few. I also like to look at my body in the mirror and imagine what it could look like. I have an affinity for motivational quotes from some of the most famous fitness guys, although there are some I don’t find helpful at all.

My biggest issue with motivation is my diet. Popular gym and diet references say it’s 30% gym and 70% diet. There are a ton of different ways to diet but the best way I found was the IIFYM (if it fits your macros) diet. Eat clean within a certain amount of calories per day and the results will show. BUT I have a small daughter with an eating problem so we have to buy her crisps and chocolate snacks otherwise some days she won’t eat anything.  This is where it becomes hard. I literally fight with myself sometimes to not eat these things and quite often I fail. I lack discipline and need to work on this myself.

I need to work on my motivation and discipline to get to where I want to be.
